A little tired but at the same time energized from a couple hundred excellent conversations with Manitobans who visited our booth at the Home Expressions Show this year.

This year’s most popular piling needs were decks, sunrooms, cottages and foundation repairs.

We would like to thank everyone who entered our draw for a $500 Postech Winnipeg gift certificate redeemable for piling work and congratulate Kris F. of the Selkirk, Manitoba area whose entry was pulled last night at 5:00 pm just as the show ended.

“Thanks again for the great job you guys did on Tuesday at my place those piles are awesome they saved me thousands in concrete work and regrading.  They were exactly what I was looking for to level my shop.  I still can’t believe how quick you guys were and how it now looks like you were never here.  Definitely the way to go, I especially like the fact that I am still able to adjust the height as needed.” Rob J., Lorette, MB

How Does Postech Winnipeg Get Their Screw Piles So Straight?

The best demonstration of how Postech Winnipeg is able to install each pile with such surgical precision is the video below.  The level of each screw pile is carefully monitored during installation.  The more often that level is adjusted during an installation, the more plumb the pile will be once it reaches the desired height.  Postech Winnipeg’s carefully chosen installation equipment provides the muscle required to ensure the soil isn’t able to displace or redirect the piles.

Helical Screw Piles Solidify Sunken Porch – Winnipeg Manitoba

Often front porches are built on concrete footings which either heave or sink; either way a moving porch is not desirable.  What is a fast, economical and effective solution?  Helical screw piles can be installed under existing porches by removing just a few floor boards.

To install piles perfectly under the existing 7 foot high roof beam, Postech Winnipeg used 5 foot piles and 5 foot extensions to achieve a 10 foot deep foundation that is anchored well below the frost line.  Postech’s professional installers also used a laser plumb bob to get the piles directly under the roof beam.

Installing Test Helical Screw Pile in a Frozen Lake for a Dock and Boathouse in North West Ontario

$

Typically a dock or boathouse rests on steel poles which are pounded into the lakes until they meet total refusal.  This means a few things but often it means huge dollars to drive the poles deep enough to reach refusal.

Recently Postech Winnipeg was contacted by a cottage owner who in getting started pounding in steel driven piles found that refusal was at 80 feet!

Because a steel driven pile has to be installed to refusal to be effective, this meant a very costly foundation for the customer.  So how are Postech’s helical screw piles different and more effective than a steel driven pile?  Great question:

  • Screw piles are made with a one or more helicals (blades set at a pitch) which create bearing capacity in any nearly any soil, including lakes.  Steel driven piles, like a screw pile include smaller diameter shafts but without a helical they do not achieve much of any bearing capacity until they reach hard pan or bed rock.
  • The helicals on a screw pile anchor the pile within the soil, creating a strong resting place.  Steel driven piles will likely sink if not driven to total refusal.  Think about hitting a nail vs. screw which are installed several inches into a piece of wood but not all the way; the nail will proceed easily and depending on the amount of force applied by the hammer, the screw may not proceed at all.
  • Helical screw piles are installed using low impact equipment which does not create vibration and that operates at a low noise level.  Steel driven screw piles are pounded into the ground using heavy machinery and installation creates heavy vibrations and is very loud.  Obviously, when installing piles in a sensitive environment such as a lake in cottage country, low impact solutions are ideal.

The best time of the year to install piles for a dock or boathouse is in the winter when installations can be performed from a solid ice surface.  The challenge of course is creating a hole in the ice large enough to allow the installation of a helical screw pile.  This is where steel driven piles offer an advantage; without a helical they only require a small hole which is easily drilled with an ice auger.

To install the test screw pile with a 16 inch helical we needed a larger hole than what a typical ice auger can drill.  The solution was to use an ice auger to drill 4 corner holes and then a chainsaw to essentially connect the dots.  The excavator broke the pile through the last couple inches of ice without much effort.  Total time to get a 16″ X 16″ hole in just over 2 feet of ice = 20 minutes.

Postech Screw Piles Anchor & Support New Washroom Facilities in Assiniboine Park

Assiniboine Park’s Lyric Theatre will soon have eco-friendly washroom facilities constructed from sea containers.  These well placed washrooms will rest comfortably on a Postech Winnipeg premium screw pile foundation.  Not only are the screw piles designed to support the weight, they will also anchor the containers.

Postech Winnipeg’s professional installers tackled the installation in frozen ground and in several locations grappled with tree roots.  The piles installed included helicals up to 20 inch in diameter; achieving capacities well in excess of 15,000 lbs.  Each of the screw piles were topped with Postech’s wind-lift secure adapters that not secure the structure but that allow for fine tune adjustment of height.

Excavating Rocks to Install Screw Piles – Twin Lake Beaches Manitoba Cottage Project

$

Today, we enjoyed a beautiful day out in Twin Lake Beaches Manitoba near St. Laurent where we were installing heavy duty screw piles for a new cottage built.  Not soon after starting the installation I was reminded how great it is to install screw piles with an excavator!

I’m often asked, “what happens if you hit rocks?”  The answer is that there are two options:

1) We use a carbide bit to rip through the rocks, this is very effective with smaller rocks up to 8 inches; or

2) We disconnect our auger driver and use our mini excavator to dig out the rock, this is usually required with larger rocks.

Today, we had dig!  As you can see in the picture below a 2 foot rock was stationed right where we had to install a corner pile.  The placement of a corner pile is crucial and has to be just right.

Image

Image

Okay, so it’s handy to use an excavator… why should customers care?  A couple reasons:

1)  Your job gets done sooner than later; and

2)  It’s cheaper!  If drilling for a concrete pile or using equipment other than an excavator for installing helical screw piles, you have to wait for an excavator with operator to be called out to the job site – usually charging more per hour than Postech Winnipeg and also charging for loading/unloading as well as transportation time.

If you have a cottage in Manitoba or North West Ontario and would like a solid foundation that installs quickly, call Postech Winnipeg at 204.793.0653 or visit www.manitobascrewpiles.ca.

Satisfied Postech Winnipeg Customers Enjoy a Solid Level Deck

“Hi Stan,

Thanks for keeping in touch. We’ve been enjoying sunsets on our front deck and are very happy with the work you did. The deck hasn’t moved at all, it’s as level as can be. We plan to re-do the walk-way, maybe some stamped concrete and some new landscaping, maybe this summer, maybe next.

You guys were great to work with, we appreciated your professionalism and expertise. I hope business is going strong.

Here’s to a nice summer!

The Warren’s”

In the fall of 2012 Postech Winnipeg was called in to fix a deck which had sunk over 9 inches over the course of a couple dry years. This might not sound like a big deal, but the deck was only out from the house 6 feet and the drop was very noticeable.

In Winnipeg, you typically don’t have to pile a deck that is less than 2 feet in height and often decks are built on deck blocks. The problem is that although the deck is lower to the ground and piles are required, if you want to build a solid deck, the only option in Winnipeg is piles.

Winnipeg soil is primarily expansive clay which expands in the winter and shrinks in the dry summer heat. Any foundation that is not firmly anchored below the active zone will be subject to movement.

So how did Postech Winnipeg fix this deck? The process might be easier than you may think:

1) We removed the railings in the front;
2) We removed 3 deck boards near the front of the deck exposing the joists;
3) Reaching through the joists we installed three 10.5 foot long screw piles with adjustable adapters;
4) Using jacks we brought the deck to the perfect height;
5) Constructed a beam to support the deck and snaked in under the deck and on-top of the pile adapters;
6) Removed the jacks and fine tuned the level with the easily adjustable adapters; and
7) Replaced the three deck boards and railing.

A Busy Day for Postech Screw Piles in Steep Rock Manitoba Cottage Country

Postech Winnipeg proudly serves Manitoba’s rural communities as well as its fantastic cottage country.  Yesterday we were out in Steep Rock, Manitoba a quaint cottage community just past Ashern, Manitoba.  We completed a total of three projects in the one day.

First Project:  We removed and replaced a customer’s steel driven piles under an existing sun room.  The existing steel driven piles were only installed 7 to 8 feet deep into clay with a high water table.  This meant that every year the steel driven piles moved; because the steel driven piles are not anchored with a helical, they must be firmly anchored in soil well below the active frost zone or the tug-of-war between non-moving soil and moving soil will result in movement.  With the helical of the screw piles now anchoring the piles, the active zone will not be able to heave the foundation.

Image

Image

Second Project:  Simple deck piles for a front-entry.  Each screw pile was installed with precision to ensure the septic holding tank was not damaged.  Each of the 10.5′ piles reached refusal at 8.5′ and were trimmed using our gas saw before they were topped-off with adjustable adapters.

Image

Third Project:  Screw piles were installed tight against an existing sun room.  The customer will then run a new beam which will attach to extended joists using joist hangers.  Our installer started the pile back to avoid the roof overhang and then straightened the pile out close to the sunroom once the auger driver was below roof level.

If you have a cottage in Manitoba or in Ontario’s Lake of the Wood then you most likely have a building project.  So why not get a great deal on a foundation that won’t move?  Call Postech Winnipeg at 204.793.0653 or visit http://www.manitobascrewpiles.ca for more information.

By temporarily supporting the deck with jacks on either side, Postech Winnipeg’s installers dug out enough soil to angle piles directly under the deck.  A beam was constructed to support the deck on the two piles, using the adjustable adapters we fine tuned the level and finally, re-attached the lattice restoring the original look.

The deck looks original but will no longer experience movement with Postech’s 10.5′ long Thermal Piles underneath.

If your deck has sunk or heaved, Postech Winnipeg can fix it once and for all.  Give us a call at 204.793.0653 to discuss how we can help you level out your summer paradise.

What do you do when you have an existing deck that requires reinforcing?

Call Postech Winnipeg at 204.793.0653 and request a deep and solid helical screw pile foundation under an existing deck.

A recent customer required a deck reinforcement so they could add an engineered roof over their deck.  The original deck was built on posts which were buried in the ground much like how a fence is built.

Using extensions and our mini-excavator, Postech Winnipeg is able to install the helical screw pile 10 feet deep under the existing structure.  Check out the following series of pictures.

Postech Screw Pile Foundation Installed for Winnipeg Folk Festival

A couple weeks ago we enjoyed another fantastic Winnipeg Folk Fest at Birds Hill Park.  Those who attended enjoyed several improvements to the venue including new food vendor stands.

Did you know that the new food vendor stands are supported by Postech Winnipeg’s Thermal Piles?

Wait… first thing, what is a Thermal Pile?  A Thermal Pile is a premium quality helical screw pile which is hot dip galvanized and then insulated for maximum protection against corrosion as well as extreme temperatures.

Postech Winnipeg’s role began when the ground was still frozen.  Using carbide drilling bits, our installers broke through the frost as well as rocks in the area to allow for the installation of the screw piles.

Next, the screw piles were cut to height and support plates were installed to support pile extensions which then supported the roof.

Finally the finishing touches were put into place just in time for Winnipeg Folk Fest.

An Eco-Friendly Foundation for an Eco-Friendly Washroom Facility

$

Have you been to Winnipeg, Manitoba’s Assiniboine Park lately?  You might notice a recent addition of funky washroom facilities constructed from sea-containers.  In May we posted an article featuring the installation of screw piles as a solid foundation for the new washrooms; below are some recent pictures of the finished product.

Image

Image

Image

In many years, when these washrooms have lived their life, the old containers can be easily removed and sold while new containers dropped on the screw pile foundation or the screw piles as well as the washrooms can be completely removed, leaving nothing more than a couple weeks of slightly displaced soil.

Do you require an eco-friendly washroom or other facility for your recreational facility, campground, RV park, etc.?  Consider retrofitted sea-containers and an equally green foundation, Postech screw piles.

To discuss your out-of-the-box, innovative building project, call Stan Higgins, Independent Owner of Postech Winnipeg at 204.793.0653 or visit http://www.screwpiling.ca.
